Hi Guys
Have a job interview today for Health and safety manager. Having worked in manufacture most of my life. However one of the points they will be asking about is my experience in their line of work. My first thought are that H and S is not tailored to any particular occupation and is a generic to all industry, and then tailored to suit, so it wouldn't matter if I had worked building cars or making card board boxes, generically its all the same.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated

Hi Ballyclover,
The work equipment / machinery would differ and carry their own individual risks, so I wouldn't say it was all the same but you're right in relation to productivity / efficiency. Maybe you could support your point on experience though by demonstrating how you can / have adapted to different working environments and kept up with the fast paced industry that is manufacturing. This could be highlighted to the interviewer as one of your key skills? Out of interest what line of work does this company involve themselves in?

There is a publication that might be of interest:
http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/hsg129.htm
It's quite useful and covers things like presses and rotating machinery, guarding, etc. If you haven't been in engineering before this will definitely supplement your manufacturing knowledge to good advantage for the interview.
Good luck.

Well interview went well in my opinion. If i'm to be honest it was a little out of my comfort zone, going for looking after 15 people to 650.
As always things that i should have said and didnt but hey ho, first interview in 10 years and wasn't even nervous. Makes a big differance actually knowing what you are talking about, and already being in a job relived some pressure i am sure.
Too right that question came up, with no experiance in our field how will you handle it.....My response, Health and Safety basics can be applied across many industries, from emplying one to employing one million, its about tailoring to the specific job, and machines used in those industries. Creating ways to pass information to staff, and ensuring their training and involvment.
Anyway wait to see if i get through to round 2
Many thanks for the advice
