Good Morning All,

I've been asked to put together a promotional h&s campaign for the college where I work due to the fact that the board has decided that they want to go down the route of achieving the BSC 5* safety audit accreditation.

For the past 12 months there has been no designated person responsible for h&S and as a result procedures have decayed and a lack of discipline and complacency has set in amongst the staff.
I've been warned that the organization contains people who are unwilling to take responsibility for h&s outside of their classroom (get in, get out attitude) and who have the mentality of "I know best" and "I've been doing it this way for x amount of years" and "we don't get paid enough" etc etc.

Has anyone experience of an internal PR campaign that helped turn the tide as far as improving the culture of your organization. i.e what worked, what didn't, what won people over?

Many thanks,
Ian A-H

Hi Clane

I've used the HSE's Do Your Bit campaign in a previous job (different sector, but the principles are the same) The website has lots of useful resources including presentations, briefs and case studies. http://www.hse.gov.uk/in...ment/doyourbit/index.htm

I worked with small, mixed groups of workers, supervisors and middle managers, who stayed together throughout the programme. It gave people a chance to see safety from others' perspectives and improved working relationships afterwards (for a bit anyway!).

Perhaps you could commandeer a spare (?) classroom and set it up for your sessions, either as a example of good or as a deathtrap!

Good luck, and as I said in another thread teachers/tutors always know better, so try and arm yourself with relevant case studies - you may need to trawl HSE/SHP websites for good material.

Hi Clane

Two additional areas that you could consider.....

1. Building on Ian's classroom session above, why not introduce hazard spotting and reporting. This could tie in roles and responsibilities, emergency processes etc.

2. Do you have access to previous HSE statistics? Perhaps build the campaign around your local 'trends'....for example, if all your first aid cases etc are from slipping over then do a Slips, Trips and Falls campaign (good stuff on the HSE website, by the way) - you could include the cleaners too.

Involve others such as the HSE Committee etc so that it's not just the H&S department

Just a few ideas

A couple of things that you could do:

Open Workshops
Microlearning

The 2 are not inter-related, but offer different modes of learning or awareness. One is physical the other is visual - similar to that of an advert. Speak to your IT dept about sending clips etc. via email. 20-30 seconds sequences are effective, particularly if you want to add music too, much like an advert!!!

Find out the reason behind the Board's decision to have the BSC 5 Star Audit. Based on your information, I will be surprised if you achieve 3 star rating.

The BSC 5 Star Audit is an audit of your entire Health & Safety Management System that also assesses the extent to which the criteria are met.

What is the role of the College "Leadership" (Senior- local College Management) in Health & Safety and how is it organised. Unless you resolve that and they then ensure that others do what is required of them via the Leadership, any promotional activity, no matter how well undertaken is unlikely to produce results.
