An employee has been diagnosed by the local A & E dept with a "whiplash" type injury resulting in lost time from work, with the potential to become RIDDOR reportable. The injury was allegedly sustained as he got out of a cherry picker basket. The cherry picker has the standard mid-rail which is lifted for the operator to get out. I believe on this occasion he "limboed" under the top bar, but is there an accepted or taught method of exiting a cherry picker basket?

Should be part of the risk assessment, otherwise they could opt to climb over the rail or anything else stupid people do.

It is in the IPAF training book.

Thank you for your response, unfortunately I don't have access to the IPAF handbook, and could not find the relevant information on their website, hence my question here

I take it this was "parked" on the ground and he was not exiting at high level. Are we seriously saying training is needed for that? Would someone like to come and show me how to get in and out of my car?
I don't see either of these activities as needing specific training, certainly not from the mewps I have ever used or seen.

Yes, lifting the top rail or gate provided by the manufacturer of the equipment.

Does it involve working at height? I am sure it does, so there is a Risk Assessment that will no doubt include use of equipment.

Exiting the cage will be part of that RA.
