Due to an increase in work we are using an agency to provide our company with additional labor (mainly electricians) the agency workers are being deployed straight to site and completing a site induction. Within our company we carry out a 'Company' induction for all staff employed directly with the company, the question I have is should we be carrying out this induction with agency staff?

Hi Martin
I would say yes, especially if they are working to your RAMS, Permits etc, you are in effect controlling their works, if they were a full subcontractor with own RAMS and the works were fully subcontracted perhaps not, I would go on the side of caution and if you have any issues down the line I cant see anyone having grounds to criticise you for inducting them, however if you haven't.....

We use agency workers on a regular basis and they have to complete the same induction process as a permanent worker would. Site safety is a given, but we also provide them with background information about the company, what is expected of them as an employee and we also set aims and objectives for them to achieve. I presume this is what you mean by 'Company Induction'.
In my opinion, it makes them feel a part of the business and possibly more motivated to work.

I agree it could be considered good practice to provide a company induction for contingent personnel. However it does depend to some extent what the company induction covers - for example, if its about using the company intranet, then labourers coming to your site will not need to know about such matters. So let's be pragmatic, as a rule they would only need a proper site induction.

thanks for the replies :-)
I think what we need to do is give all agency workers an 'info' pack/sheet as its not going to be possible to give a company induction to all agency guys given their locations but we do need to give them information and get our H&S message over to them. The info pack/sheet would contain our H&S policy statement, contact details for the SHEQ Department along with details on their role and responsibility regarding H&S. The hiring manager of the agency worker would issue it it to them along with verifying their qualifications

Agency workers need to be tret like employees, you have a duty so yes give them the company induction.

There requires to be an agreement between the agency and you, in that you are required to set your standard of workers that are supplied to you.
In addition to this, whatever your requirements that are needed for a particular job, this must be requested to the agency to ensure that they supply you with a person that is competent to conduct that task you need to be fulfilled. This is you duty. Once the agency worker is on site, they need to know of any site specific safety issues, in which this is done at the site induction. So my answer is yes you do.
