The link took me to reports on toys.
The subject of asbestos is more relevant on this forum.

If you follow through the weekly reports you can see things (not just toys) that a full of substances banned over here. Also faulty electrical products.
Its true its aimed more at consumer products but it does show we cannot rely on the "authorities" nor the law to do our job for us in ensuring materials and equipment we buy are safe.

Wasn't aware of that, but have not seen rebar used on sites where I've worked.

Given all the unsafe and fake products which emanate from China perhaps it's about time a worldwide ban is introduced in order they smarten up their act.

It is a huge problem, but part of the problem is that certain British retailers have always been happy to buy counterfeit and illegal goods.
Yesterday I saw a report on TV of a fellow in Britain selling fake Honda airbags - something meant to save lives, which when tested would kill you, I just can't comprehend why he would do this.

Chasing the bogeyman aren't we?
They aren't illegal exports, they're illegal imports. There's an agent in the UK hoping to turn a profit who isn't conducting due diligence checks.

We also need buying departments or whatever fancy title they give themselves, to operate due dillegence in our own respective organisations. If something is cheap there is usually a reason but that appears to be lost on the spread sheet kids

Not just Australia that have been caught out. I recall a report a few years ago where one of the UK's large DIY companies imported some gas BBQ's from China. Fortunately before they put them on sale someone checked and found they has an asbestos gaskets. Were not quit able to turn the ship round but don't think the container ever left the dock!
