Hi all, using a 360 grab (with lifting attachment) to lift a maintenance cover / hatch (very heavy section of steel) - do we need an appointed person for this? Simple lift plan completed. Thanks in advance.

What size is the section of steel?
What is the weight of the lift?

If you go onto the Construction Plant Association web site and go into Special Interest groups Cranes. There is a free download which will help.

Hi - the weight of the cover (steel) - not easy, four men could lift it (if that helps any!).
The driver of the 360 (grab) is CPCS trained - surely this would cover the lift activity.

Hi Alex - thanks for the info - is the download you are referring to CIG 0801? this seems to be the closest to the issue.

As an AP I would say no, as long as the lift in properly planned and supervised there should be no cause for concern.

How can I the a 'good' lift plan if you don't know the weight of the load?? :o)

I have to agree to disagree.
A few that I know off the major planyt hire companies are having to put people on Appointed Person &Lift Supervisor courses. This is due to clients telling them they must have them if carrying out their work.
Therefore do you want the work ? hold the card.
I am not saying it is right nor wrong again it is a case of do it or do without.
One reasonable sized company in the area has now said they will not carry out any lifting with their 360 machines to save the bother and hassle.
My personal opinion is yes planned lifts by carded AP&LS for 360 degree plant is the correct way ahead.
If you look deeper into it the newer CPCS 360 card holders are trained in lifting techniques and their is a category on the card to show this.
Again you would have to form your own opinion on what to do regarding AP &LS training for your work force .
Ta Alex
