Hello,
What are your thoughts about fire protection for people who work at home not including heat/smoke detection as most of us have this now. I was thinking more about fire extinguisher, required yes or no.

Most of use have extinguishers in the office environment, should this also be applicable for home office?

Control of fire risk at work rests with the controller of the premises, which is not always the direct employer and almost certainly wouldn't be in the case of home working.

From a general duty of care point of view an employer asking an employee to carry out work at home that introduced additional fire risk, e.g. welding, would presumably have a higher level duty of care and would certainly need to carry out a risk assessment and implement the findings, but I can't think of any common working scenarios where that might happen off the top of my head.

Fires do occur at home with worrying frequency and with fatalities too, so a good argument could be made for all homes having extinguishers. But that's for another discussion.

However, the fire risk arising purely from the home office work must surely be much lower than a typical office (more people, people case fires) so the need for an extinguisher actually in the office is also much less, probably vanishingly small.

There have been previous discussions here on whether extinguishers are really necessary in any office environment with polarised opinions.

The regulatory reform fire safety order does not apply to non domestic premises the home worker can block his fire escape and have a gallon of petrol next to his computer with burning joss sticks.

Its his home and castle and if he has a fire extinguisher or detection its his descision not some health and safety person from the H&S department were he works. If my work wanted me to carry out a risk assessment in my house, i would then work from the office

Psycho, apart from the typo (you mean 'domestic', not 'non domestic) I absolutely agree. I do have a fire exitinguisher though, but it's for the wood pellet boiler and IMO it's quite a good thing to have,

Assuming they are not working with flammables or doing hot work, then I wouldn't get involved.
