Personally I'd advocate going down the examined route rather than NVQ route - note: not necessarily NEBOSH, there are other options available. As this helps to demonstrate to a potential employer that you know the theory - not always obvious in my view with NVQs for a variety of reasons. clearly to show competence you need to combine this with 'experience' of actually doing the job. As for the statements about 'NEBOSH speak' etc. - don't just put down everything you know about the subject to which the question relates, just answer the question - this is particularly true of real life. If my CEO asks me a question he want s short concise answer, not me telling him everything I know about the subject.

I started out as a shop steward with the T&G as well, back in the 1980s. I did a ten day H&S course over ten weeks, started me out with the right attitude and it's stuck with me ever since, John

Yes, sorry, forgot about the TUC course which is, of course, excellent and right up there. My brother did his training as a Trade Union Rep.

Everyone gets bogged down with NEBOSH or NVQ? What about NCRQ? All are equally as valid towards an end goal. The reality is what ever examination or qualification if you can't put theory into practice and demonstrate professional competence or excellence; then I don't care what initials you have after your name. All I'd say is I went down the NEBOSH route and it was ok for me; but I have colleges who didn't and their knowledge and experience is professionally excellent. Its about putting whatever theory you have into practice at work not on paper. NEBOSH is expensive as well; but if you are a novice to this profession, its about your only route in really.
