Hi
Just wondered if anyone could assist on this one for me please.
I have a warehouse client using a fork lift truck to lift a hand pallet truck in a container lorry.
What are your thoughts on the safety of this and any recommendations or procedures.
Regards
Julie

Hi
This is quite a common practice, its the how the person gets into the back of the lorry that's normally a concern!
I have caught someone standing on the forks with the pump truck to 'steady it' apparently!

As Mr F 2.0 says- common practice.
Years ago if we hadn't got the FLT available we would have the person on the back of the trailer hold the handle and someone grab the forks of the pallet truck and then LIFT!!! The good old days, eh?
As long as people are kept away from the back of the trailer when the plt truck is being lifted up- the only damage will be to the truck if it falls.
Its good practice to have an exclusion zone around the rear of trailers when they are being loaded/ unloaded. The results when it goes wrong can be life changing...

You could always consider installer a dock leveller

I obviously meant installing not installer

You could even place the pallet truck onto a pallet (securely, of course!) and then the FLT lifts the pallet as per normal procedure.
Access onto the lorry can be easily conducted by providing a set of step-ladders that can be purchased relatively cheaply. A small amount of awareness training on the use of the ladder would then suffice.

Very common in logistics where I work. FLT offloads first 2 pallets opening a working space, FLT driver positions safety steps at rear of trailer to allow operator onto work space, FLT driver removes steps to 5S location. FLT then used to lift pallet truck onto back of vehicle, allowing operator time to manouvre remaining pallets to rear of trailer. Once unloaded, pallet truck removed, FLT driver replaces steps to allow operator to egress trailer. Steps moved to 5S area. Ensure PIT area marked out so only person in it is the FLT driver with vehicle. Risk of fall from height for operator is the highest factor.
