Morning All I am attempting to clarify the testing requirements for OT equipment (tube swings, balance boards etc). These are normally used under a suspension frame fitted with eye bolts, rotary swivel couplings and finally ropes/straps connected by carabina. Having spoken to several distributors and other research, I am not able to fully ascertain if these items could fall within LOLER and therefore require six monthly inspection? Currently all items are visually inspected monthly and this is recorded. I am being told that these items are described as 'vestibular' and not falling within LOLER requirements - I am not sure this is so? Can anyone share their experiences / understanding?

The classification of this type of equipment under LOLER is indeed not clear and an example of equipment close to what you have mentioned is a dentist chair, which is not covered under the regs. Of course, you should also view the equipment under PUWER, because it is used in a working environment and take all reasonable steps to subject them to a regular visual and periodic inspection depending on their use - this should be suitable and sufficient in nature. This will normally be as a result of a risk assessment. This process will ensure that the equipment is 'fit for purpose'. http://www.hse.gov.uk/wo...machinery/inspection.htm Hope that helps......

We found that suppliers were lacking in knowledge and we always inspected etc. such kit under LOLER and if in doubt under PUWER; as for monthly activities, do U mean monthly checks as against monthly inspections as they are 2 different things - such kit is even more difficult to managed when it is owned by a patent yet used by staff NB: I found that our people were checking and not inspecting as they were not qualified to inspect & they thought that a check was an inspection?

Thanks Gents for your input. Just to clarify, the Therapists carry out daily visual checks and I do monthly inspections. My background is many years of construction equipment hire, including hoists, forklifts etc. We have attempted to source inspections through insurers and specialist lifting inspection companies with little success! Nothing is ever straightforward. Thanks again!
