I have started to review my companys ladeder log and whilst I fully understand the rules and regs with regards to portable ladders and access equipment I can not seem to find definitive guidance on fixed ladders.
We have fixed steel verticle ladders varying from 2 step up to 25 step. These are welded in position with the longer ones having hooped protection. They are inside a fenced secure compound and are only used by on site Technicians and contractors.
The ladders themselves were purpose built and installed by the company that built our facility in 2001. They are at present inspected 6 monthly and recorded, they are checked prior to each use and on completion of use.
Can anybody shine a light on any specific documentation for inspection routines and periodicity please.
Many thanks
Rob

By the sound of things I think you are doing sufficient to cover yourself in terms of inspection frequency etc. From what I can tell it fundamentally comes down to risk assessment (as so often seems the case) rather than having set schedules written into legislation.
I don't have access to a copy of BS 4211: 2005 Specification for permanently fixed ladders so I can't say if there is any mention in here to the inspection routine but might be worth buying a copy if you want to be sure? http://shop.bsigroup.com.../?pid=000000000030219417
I also found this article (perhaps a little out of date now) which might prove a useful read in terms of summarising the very problem you have described: http://www.healthandsafe...s-safe-use-fixed-ladders
Hope something in there might help you out?

Thank You Grim72, you have confirmed everything that my research found. I have created a specific Risk Assessment for utilising the access ladders for that purpose alone and incorporated it along with working at height and mewp in to our HSE system.
Thanks again
