I still can't believe how part-time health and safety positions are so hard to find. They seem to be predominantly non-existent or administration level. I am fortunate enough to be a part-time health and safety consultant for a very small but growing consultancy, however, there has been very little choice! I re-located and have two small children and wanted some life balance so working full-time had to take a back seat, but I have had to improvise to ensure that my CV doesn't go stale and I feel annoyed that I am unable to continue exercising my Managerial skills until I can go back to full-time, by which time I am not sure I will be on the top of the pile for managerial roles.

I have one! Granted it was full time but went off on maternity leave and reduced hours. Still expected to do 5 days work in the 3 days though so often respond to emails / queries etc when I''m technically not at work. Been told the hours have been allocated elsewhere so can't up them either. Means looking for another role or maintaining the status quo. Quite happy to have 2 days a week I can do my own thing (child now at primary school) as be doing a few FutureLearn courses on various topics as they are free. Not sure if they'd advertise my role as full or PT if I were to leave though...(not planning to unless I have a massive windfall of money head my way and the chance of that happening....)

Had I not relocated my previous employer would have been very supportive of granting reduced hours after maternity leave, I can completely understand your situation! Shame I had to relocate and that the world is not set up for decent level part-time health and safety roles! I bet there are hundreds of people with expertise that would happily make use of a part time role and either have had to change careers or be forced to work full time/contract work!

I've wanted to work part-time for years, mainly for my own life balance not childcare. After several months of no answer from my employer & no part-time roles advertised, I resigned from my full-time job and went contracting... Now I work the days I want to work, it pays the bills and I am so much happier. Yes, I accept that I'll have to keep hunting on a regular basis & make sure I have enough for the dry periods but ultimately I did the best thing for me.

Could you start up on your own? It could be an alternative to a part time post.

Well at least the opportunity exists My wife declared she was pregnant and was given "her cards" at the end of that week. She was told not to consider resuming her nursing career until the kids were at school. So we had to manage on one pay packet for 5 years. Obviously this was some years ago but now we grow closer to reaping the benefits of our life long prudence I hear we old uns are selfish.

You might not realise it but you live in a (quite rightly) enlighted age. Count your blessings And another thing! Ask your parents about 15% mortgage rates! yeh yeh I know I'm an old git ;-)) and you have heard it all before.

They reduced working hours in Sweden to 6 a day and increased hourly rate. Production didn't fall, people are happier and work better. I'm looking forward to seeing such approach across Europe.

As a growing consultancy based in the East Midlands, we employ 5 consultants and 2 are part-time. Perhaps we are more forward thinking. As well as the right competency, we value attitude.
