Good Morning,

Our Company is being asked by a main contractor to produce a manufacturers inspection cert every 6 months for harnesses we are using on a project. We, as a company, carry out weekly inspections of all our harnesses and each harness carries the manufacturers certificate of conformity (and life expectancy). Surely we do not need to get the manufacturer out every 6 months to certify each one of our many harnesses. I don’t see anything in legislation or code of practice to indicate that we need to do this. Any info would be greatly appreciated., Cheers

Thanks Invictus. I wonder who should be carrying out the detailed inspections? And if the inspections are carried out in-house, what level of competency/training should the inspector have?

Hi Hodor

Try your insurers, they normally carry these inspections. Or you can employ an external company, just google "thorough examination".

I would try your insurers first.

What do you use your harnesses for? If they are restraint harnesses solely for use with MEWP's, I've recently discovered that the IPAF Harness Awareness course changed in the summer of 2015 and it now actually gives the training which allows company personnel to carry out the 6 monthly thorough examinations in-house.

It was a training provider who told me this and I was scepticle as I had always thought this course was for the users of harnesses so I contacted IPAf directly who confirmed the following:

- harness awareness course used to be for users covering correct harness selection, pre-use inspestion and fitting of harnesses
- above was incorporated into the courses for operating the MEWPs in summer 2015 and the new course would enable in-house personnel to carry out the thorough examinations PROVIDING THE HARNESSES WHERE ONLY USED WHEN OPERATING MEWPS

I underwent a half-day harness inspection training and I'm now competent to do 6 monthly checks.
