This may seem a simple and silly question...In terms of knowing whether a substance is hazardous when dealing with waste disposal, is their website that contains all listed hazardous materials? Or is it a chase of checking the substance MSDS?

How you assess waste to check if it’s hazardous changed on 1 July 2015. Read the technical guidance to find out how to assess and classify waste using the new system. Technical Guidance WM3: Waste Classification - Guidance on the classification and assessment of waste Go to: https://www.gov.uk/gover...ation-technical-guidance

The SDS should have a reference to a EWC code which is 6 digits written in the form 12 34 56* if it has an "*" after it as I have shown, it is hazardous waste. This also assumes you have not altered it. There will not be the same number with and without the *, they will be different numbers. There is also a list of waste - The List of Wastes (England) Regulations 2005 (or Wales version) that will list codes and descriptions. If you produce over 500kg of Hazardous waste in Wales you need to register (not England anymore). Not sure how to copy this link but Google "EA using the list of wastes to code waste" and there should be a "List of wastes" PDF version 1 from the Env agency - all 71 pages of it. Wonderful reading Chris

Bazzer gave a more up to date link to list. Nb the list I referred to also lists the codes alphabetically for the substance, may help give a clue as to which part to look under. Chris
