I worked as a safety adviser both in an industrial R&D concern and also an academic institution. I found that it was easy to get people interested in SHE in the latter. The drivers to get things right in the academic environment were largely moral - they really did not want their students and colleagues hurt. Reputation of the institution is another powerful driver to get things right.

I'm H&S Officer at Edinburgh College of Art, part of Edinburgh University, and the one thing I would say , above all else, is listen more than you speak. Whether staff or student, those you work with will believe (arguably correctly so) that what they do is more interesting than your 'boring' job, so ask them about their work, then introduce safety as an element. As noted above, pursuing the moral aspect is one avenue. Always emphasise the practical benefits of what you propose, rather than the legislative (though it's worth reminding them of that. It takes time, but building up raport with staff and students, and making them aware that H&S is about 'how?' and not 'No!' Oh, and smile! - be approachable, be helpful, and help them look for solutions to problems you highlight I also produce a quarterly newsletter where I relate H&S specifically to the activities we do so they are kept informed, but even more so, they see that H&S IS relevant to them. Good luck! Al

I agree with the previous comments. You will find that people will start to come to you with their concerns. I working in a college for over ten years and it is a part of the culture. Especially given as the focus is on the safety of the students. All I would say IMHO as with starting any job don't go it and try to change everything from day one. It is an evolution not a revolution. That and consultation is key.
