Can someone please advise if the partial amputation of a finger is reportable under RIDDOR, basically the top bone underneath the finger nail has been sliced off. I have seen some old posts that didn't seem conclusive and I am aware RIDDOR requirements changed not that long ago.

HSE website says amputations but does not specify finger arm etc so yes and I would suggest if not amputation then over 7 day injury. Report

Hi Mark, We had an almost identical situation 12-18 months back. The operator sliced to the base of his nail bed, but, based on the guidance that was copied above, we did not report as it was not past the top knuckle i.e. that knuckle nearest the finger tip.

Be very careful - the guidance quoted is for HSE/LA inspectors on what RIDDOR notifications should be investigated by them -not what makes something notifiable. Look at the bit about broken bones - it states multiple brakes but RIDDOR only requires 1 (unless finger or toe.) On this topic I thought there used to be guidance on what qualified as an amputation, but unable to track it down at the moment.

Had a look on the HSE website, link below if it works http://www.hse.gov.uk/ri.../specified-injuries.html Amputation of an arm, hand, finger, thumb, leg, foot or toe Amputation includes both a traumatic amputation injury at the time of an accident, and surgical amputation following an accident, as a consequence of the injuries sustained. I would guess that they would have more than 7 days away from their normal work

I was told several moons back that if part of the bone has been taken off then that is/was classed as an amputation; that was by the now defunct HSE Info line. I reported the incident concerned. HTH Stuart

Stuart, the advice given to you is similar to what I received from the HSE, & after receiving accident reports involving "amputations" I would ask whether it was the "fleshy bit" at the end or the bone! There always seemed to be a pregnant pause when I asked this question, but if it was indeed the "fleshy bit", then it was deemed a laceration & not an amputation!
