Hi,

I live in Cape Town - South Africa, am a self employed safety consultant for the past 10 years and I see health and safety more as a 'cause' than a vocation.

I have 20 years experience in Health and Safety and spent the past 10 years specialising in Construction Safety (both as Clients agent and assisting Contractors) Design/Development and Implementation of site safety management systems while

My wife is British and we will be moving to the UK next year August. (I have a Hungarian Passport).

What would be the best distance-learning-safety related course to do, that will supplement my experience and help with the transition from South African safety legislation to European best practices. I will be looking for work in the UK and was hoping that the marriage of the recommended course/diploma and my experience would make me very employable.

Regards
Clinton

Howzit!

I'm currently studying for the NCRQ diploma in Applied Health and Safety, which is a distance learning only diploma.

its split over 3 units, the first of which is a standalone certificate in Applied Health and Safety.

The certificate is recognised by IOSH for Associate and Technical membership, and there is an introduction to the legal system in England and Wales (up in Scotland we have our own legal system where there are some differences from legal system in England and Wales)

I'm not sure we are allowed to provide direct links on here, but if you google NCRQ you'll find them.

There may be other options available, but the NCRQ route was the one that best fit my requirements.

Good luck with the move!

Also, I understand you can study the Nebosh International Diploma (level 6) in South Africa - maybe even the National diploma(?). This would allow you to gain Graduate status which would put you on your way to becoming Chartered.

Hi
If you're not yet a Tech-IOSH then go along the route suggested but then apply to sit the Diploma, either Nebosh or distance route as this will allow you to become a Grad-IOSH, then with CPD will allow you to apply for CMIOSH which will really get you on the radar. Tech-IOSH alone is more an entry level status and you'd struggle to find work with just this.

Hope this helps

I should have also mentioned if you did go down the NCRQ route and continued with the diploma, it does open up the Grad IOSH/ CMIOSH route for you too.

Thanks Tom.
I am a Tech-SAIOSH(South African version of IOSH) and I would definitely like to work towards the CMIOSH status.

Nebosh International Diploma is available through Phoenix in South Africa and its cheaper but I am just concerned that their may be more of a bias towards Shields in the UK. I am also not sure if there is a difference in course content.

Lekker lekker!

I'm another South African. I've been here since 2005.

I think with your relevant experience with the South African version of the CDM Regulations you will have some transferrable skills either in a consultant type role to clients and designers or as a Health and Safety Advisor working for a contractor or Principal Contractor.

I have a National Diploma in Safety Management from South Africa. Initially this was only good enough to get me Tech IOSH back in 2005 - it did not hold me back though. But in 2012/13, IOSH saw the light and gave me Grad IOSH. Go figure. I decided, after many years of internal wrangling as to what my best options were, to complete a MSc. I've passed all the modules required for a Post Grad Diploma (also good enough for Grad IOSH), and after leaving it for a year have just embarked on the final module that once passed will get me the MSc. I also have Certified Membership with the Association for Project Safety.

There are many routes to Grad IOSH, which will definitely help. It takes time though, so be prepared for a bit of hard work - there are no shortcuts.

In the interim, I would suggest looking at the NEBOSH construction certificate as this might get you a foot on the ladder in terms of work.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for your input. I noted on one of the other forums, a member complaining about being disregarded for a placement even though he had the MSc, because he felt that the employer was fixated on the Nebosh Diploma.

Well, probably not an employer I would waste my time with if they are that narrow minded........I've reviewed many profiles for H&S professionals who have leadership positions e.g. Head of H&S, H&S Director and many have Masters level qualifications. There is even research that suggests those with Masters level qualifications can expect to earn more. Besides it's quite a different animal to the NEBOSH diploma, and many complete the diploma and then enrol for a Masters. Just another option.
