I am currently writing a site specific emergency light procedure for a residential property we represent as the managing agent. I have BS5266-1 and in there it states that before bringing emergency lights into emergency mode we need to ensure there is enough natural light throughout the test.
The property has six floors with the main stairwell emergency lit. The Stairwell is enclosed and has no natural light sources. The emergency light fittings are installed in the normal light fittings so there is no alternative source of light other than the emergency lights.
Has anyone faced a similar predicament and have a suitable solution? The property has a lift onsite so I thought occupants could be notified to use this exclusively during the notified test period, however if the emergency lights inside this failed then users would be left in the dark.
Any help is much appreciated!

You also need to consider that if you are undertaking a full 3hr discharge test, that the lights will then not achieve the full 3 hr time required if they have not fully charged after the discharge test.
Thus for example, you finish a full discharge test @ 15:45 on a winters evening, and there is a fire in the building @ 18:00, it is doubtful that the lights will perform as required.
The recharge time is almost certainly more than a couple of hours.
You need to know this.
Your best bet is to get the system completely re-configured so that it is fully compliant with BS 5266, because, given your comments it isn't.

Thanks for your response Paul. Are you referencing section 6.2 & 6.3 of BS5266-1 when you refer to "non-compliance"?
