I was wondering if any care home H&S people amongst the forum had a view on the need for visiting hairdressers, who are independently and regularly engaged by a resident, having to have DBS checks, (ie they do not use the Home's hairdresser who is DBS checked). Would you expect the resident's own hairdresser to be DBS checked or would you treat the resident's hairdresser as a visitor to the resident and treat them like any other visitor that may visit the resident in the premises? Your comments would be welcome.

Do you have a DBS check on every delivery driver / courier / the post man / the milk man / refuse operative...?
Treat them as the individual visitor for the resident which they are
or upset all the residents and insist only DBS cleared visitors are allowed - can't wait to see the Daily Wail headline on that one "The care home that... doesn't"

Who would you expect to cover the cost of this DBS check?

We would insist on a DBS as she is in employment, but the likes of contractors, will always be supervised by our staff and never left alone, the postman doesn't enter the premises, delivery drivers if they need to enter the building will always be supervised.
Would you insist on agency staff requiring it? They might only be there for a few hours but they will have access to all parts of the building and to residents, visitors don't they stay in the visitors room or the persons room and we then have supervision walking around. Having someone coming in on a regular basis who is not deemed a visitor, will lead to complacency and could further lead to the lack of supervision.

Invictus - I think you've pretty much nailed it there. You can risk assess the need. For example, if you have a retirement village or sheltered housing where the hairdresser is just visiting their client's self contained property then there is not an issue.
If it is a nursing home (corridors, carers etc.) then yes, DBS required if they have unsupervised access to the residents whilst in the salon area.
The way nursing homes work, the hairdresser will soon get additional work in the home from word of mouth so the DBS cost is less of an issue.
