Can I just get some advice on fire doors please. We have a site that has had a refit and the new fire doors have a round blue badge on these stating these are fire doors. They have small glass panel in them , as well as in tumescent strip and cold seal. But do they have to have any other certification or signage to say they are 30 or 60 minute fire rated doors, there in nothing on the doors or glass panel to show this ? All advice appreciated

There should be a small plate or label on the top of the door stating if it is a fire door. It could have been removed by the fitter planing it but should not have been. It may also be on the bottom of the door if the fitter placed the door upside down. The glass should be acid etched with the standard. It may not be if it is a certified set- then look for the plate. In general terms if a door is wooden and about 40mm it is FD30. If it is metal or 60mm or more it usually is FD60- This is not an exact science though!!!

On reading my response again let me just rephrase. If the door in question to which you think is a fire door then the difference in size may indicate the fire resistance. Made sense when I wrote it but not so much when I read it!!!

The blue tag fitted is fine normally indicates FD30. It may have FR 'Fire Resistance'

Could you ask whoever was managing the refit to send you copies of the door certs?

They should supply certs, if they don't ask for the certification number and you can access them on line. You can still check on the top of the cert for the tag and while your looking check they haven't removed ot for any reason i.e. to take some off the top of the door which you are not allowed to do or gone through it to put in a smoke seal if they have not come as a door set. Either of these will invalidate the insurance on the door.

There are joiners who have been trained and certificated to fit fire door sets and people who have not received such should not install fire doors. There is more to it than just being a joiner. Correct hardware needs to be used and any holes need to be filled with correct filler. There is a top and a bottom and the plate signifying fire door should be at the top. Use a mirror. The glass should be etched as written above. The supplier will provide certs for the door sets if requested. Health and Safety File should have the information.
