CPCS v NPORS recognition/accreditation - BuildUK?

I recently went to my local H&S committee meeting where it was discussed that BuildUk, who oversee huge clients such as Balfour Beatty, will not be accepting NPORS cards as from Jan 2017. My director came back from a meeting with Balfour Beatty yesterday who told him the same.
We have spent over £3K this year alone on NPORS training for our operatives.
Does anyone else have any 'concrete' news/info on this matter please?

Here is a link to the BuildUK document which explains it all but in essence you are right: http://builduk.org/wp-co...ng-Build-UK-Standard.pdfI have however unofficially heard that NPORS are working to change things at their end to allow them to display the CSCS logo on their cards to overcome this issue but I don't know how true this is.

Again, a number of the large construction companies only accept CPCS.
From my experience, I do prefer the CPCS scheme as the guys "should" be keeping a log book which is good demonstration of on-going competence.

Thanks for all replies so far.
Appreciate & respect your opinion ge1971 but the main problem, for me, is standardisation. In the construction industry, there doesn't seem to be much at all. NPORS are a nationally recognised training provider, who SMEs invest a lot of money into, only for BuildUk to come along a move the goalposts basically when they feel like and, in my opinion, at an unacceptably short notice to the industry.
There has surely got to be some notice period that this is being phased in?
Thanks fscott - good info - appreciated.

Yes, a lot of the main contractor group do not accept NPORS already, and we ourselves too have spent a lot of money on this training in the past, even though it is accred by HSE. We now solely go down the more expensive route of CPCS only.
The main contract groups make rules as they please, which is fair enough on their behalf, but yes I do agree, they need to have a phased in approach, most SME's dont have the resources to just go out and get the training done, or get the relevant tools they require.

Not being directly involved in construction I had never heard of Build UK
Noting the company you mention and a recent H&S court case, I thought I'd have a look at Build UK standards
I can't see ones for: Controlling excavations Managing Contractors Complying to contracts
Which is a pity.

Hi sorry to but into this conversation but had to join in order to post a response. I am an NPORS instructor and the scheme has moved on a little since your post. From Oct 2016 the NPORS card will be carrying the CSCS logo and therefore operators should not technically be excluded from applying for a job with this card. The BuildUK site is now not technically carrying correct or current information as I see it and am not saying anything to imply that and they could well be in the process of an update for all i know but things have changed and the NPORS Construction card with the NVQ attached will no longer be able to be regarded as a certificate of basic training and the fact it will hold the CSCS logo meets policy. Anyway you have not wasted any money on NPORS cards if you want to work with competent staff (training is never a waste) and also on any other sites that are not BuildUK members. A normal NPORS card can be converted to the Construction Card by doing the NVQ and having current CSCS card. If you would like the information straight from the horses mouth as they say please call NPORS on 01606 351240 or visit the web site on www.npors.com. I hope this information helps and once checked out I would suggest to you that revisiting the question of the BuildUk members would save you money by sticking with the NPORS scheme but we will still be up against the site policies.

Thanks GavinA, very useful information.
I've also been reliably informed that any of our operatives that have an NPORS card but do not hold the NVQ Level 2 Plant Operators Certificate will have two years to complete this award for it to be recognised by BuildUk.
I've also spoken to a training provider who believes that we will be able to get greatly reduced funding through CITB's levy and that the actual training will be one and a half days which has alleviated lots of concerns.

Yeah they can do the NVQ at any point and update their cards accordingly so whilst working on most sites you won't need this cscs logo business for the BuidUk sites you would be able to select you operatives and get them registered.
NPORS do not deliver the NVQ's so just find someone local to you that can do them and send in the certificates of achievement just like cpcs.
Glad i helped in a small way though.
