Hi
I am an MSc holder (self-funded) in Occupational Safety and Health Management and a GradIOSH Member. I obtained MSc in the UK. I had a little experience in H & S while I was doing MSc in a Food Production Company where I was working. I would like to change my career to Health and Safety. As I work full-time, however, I am free on Fridays. I can spend my whole time every Fridays for 3 or 4 months to obtain work experience to apply for H&S.
Also I am planning to do NEBOSH General Certificate , self-funding, that is a requirement by most of the employers. I will finish this course asap (before apply to a job) because I am a hard worker.
Please, can anyone in this field help me to get work experience in your workplace?
Thanks

If you are GradIOSH you are wasting your time and money with the NGC.

I realise you are desperate for a job, but any employer who is not aware your qualifications are far superior to the Cert is not worth working for.

Suggest you do either an Environmental Cert or a teaching qualification

Hi Walker
Do you suggest that Environmental certificate is also goes towards H&S field?
Teaching qualification means it gives the opportunity to work in schools or it is related to be a health and safety trainer?
I have no problem at present in the workplace as it is a full-time position. Only thing I prefer a change of my career.
Thanks

Most H&S folks have E tacked to their responsibilities.
Most H&S folks are required to deliver H&S based training.

If looking at teaching qualifications. The PGCE might be a bit full on for your needs. Your local FE college should be able to offer PTLLS, CTLLS or DTLLS. I'll let you research the differences :-)

Hi WatsonD
It is again completely different form of what I have done so far. It deviates me from the aim. These qualifications lead to level 3 to 5 and offer a position as an associate teacher. Will see what else can be done towards H&S field.
Thanks for the comments.

You are missing the point. PTLLS is basic teaching training, which will allow you to construct and deliver a training course, which often H&S people are expected to do. Ie manual handling training etc. I did it a few years ago not difficult and made some sense and gives another aspect of H&S that you can offer employers.

Hi Chris42
Sorry about this. I went through the courses about PTLLS and I could not get any clue in them.
There is no problem of doing this teaching course.
If I do this course I will provide training to the employees on self-employed basis myself or on behalf of a company that has got teachers who provides health and safety training.
Provision of h & s training, shouldn't I be a health and safety professional?
Please write to me about this that will be very much helpful for me. I have no idea about this.
Thanks

No this will enhance your skill set. In itself it wont mean that you will get a full time teaching role. Training is often a part of the H&S practitioners role.

As you will see from other posts on here, employers don't just want someone with health and safety knowledge, but someone who is able to communicate, manage, influence and get ideas across. You can't manage H&S in isolation, and training staff is in integral part of that. Do it well and you have buy in. Do it badly and well, you've just created another hurdle.

Like you say you need some work experience. I would love to help, but I cannot, I'm afraid. Perhaps post your preferred areas of travel and hopefully someone can help . Good luck!

I came late to reply as I have followed a course of CPR (Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation) this morning. It is really a refresher course.
Thanks

As I work full-time I have only Friday available to do work experience. Can any of the H & S Professionals provide me a day (Friday - whole day) work experience for at least 3 to 4 months that will be appreciated and very grateful for me to commence a new role in H &S field?
I live in London, thence I can travel with in the areas that are covered by TFL. Please consider not too far as I have to spend time on travelling, instead if the place is closer I can spend that time to offer my service to the work place.
Please kindly help me.
Thanks

Hi
I had an experience in Teaching when I was working as a Registrar to the Department of Surgery, University, Faculty of Medicine, to the Medical Students and also to the Nursing School and to the Midwifery school.
Also I have experience in teaching Science and Maths to Primary and Secondary school students for the last 8 years since 2009.
Do you think this will helpful as an additional experience for H&S role?
Thanks

Wow thats a lot of jobs, and teaching too? Are you not happy with any of it? I would of thought a Doctors salary beats a H&S managers salary by far, but what i can't understand with all the different Jobs you've done will you be happy doing H&S, or is that too just going to be a phase until you find something else to do?

Sorry if i appear blunt, but its a good question that a potential employer will ask
