There must be other unemployed H&S people out there have any of you got the new Universal Job match web site to work ( the mandatory one – O no it isn’t, O yes it is). When I search for “Health and Safety Manager” roles it either comes out with odd results i.e. Recreation and Leisure co-ordinator, RGN General Nurse Receptionist Chef/cook Invigilator Senior Service Assistant Commis Chef Royal Artillery UAV Battery Captain Warehouse controller Or It feels that Birmingham is only 50 miles away from South Wales ( Oddly the AA think it is 90 miles, but what do they know). There was one in Bristol, but sadly I don’t know anything much about Submarines. One job was in about 30 miles from Bournemouth, so 110 miles to work. I would not mind so much but now they are expecting that you say why you did not apply (pick from drop down list). I assume anything you pick from the list will come back to haunt you, but who knows. I don’t mind a fair drive in the morning, but a few hundred miles to work every day is a bit OTT (Over The Top) isn’t it. Must check the Salary Survey again to see if it will account for the mileage. As you cannot avoid using this site has anyone got any tips on its use.

Try typing NEBOSH in the key words box, that usually gets results.

Some years ago I heard of a chap who was keen to join the Royal Artillery. However, when he applied, he was unsuccessful. When he asked why, he was told he wasn't someone of the right calibre for the job!!! :-) Also, if H&S people enter the abbreviation RA (risk assessment) when dealing with a computer job matching system, perhaps the system has a limited vocabulary and therefore thinks that RA stands for Royal Artillery! This took me by surprise when I noted my name against it, as I have been working for 3.5 years now. Even I'm surprised I'm with the same company. Keeping an eye on job market every now and then, but not going near that useless web site. Chris
