I am looking at using video's as internal training aids for subjects such as Manual Handling, Lifting and Slinging and Abrasive wheel replacement on angle grinders etc etc. My question is would this method of training hold any weight with say the HSE or during a 18001 audit or am i wasting my time?

The key is 'training aids' - videos are just what these are. You don't expect viewers to become an expert in watching a video, but the right materials, delivered in the right way are invaluable in improving knowledge. You can't just put people in a room and show them a video, then expect them all to have undergone 'training'. Videos could be supported by follow-up questions and answers sessions, demonstrations, training feedback etc. and should be coupled with a signed attendance record. You could also have a training programme, skills matrices and training plans in place, tailored to the needs of your business and of your employees. You're not wasting your time in using videos - it's all about how the videos are used.

Isn't e-learning basically the same as watching a video, although they might have questions at the end who actually knows who is answering them, unless they are monitored constantly..

Videos and e-learning all have a part to play in providing training but the whole thing must be put together properly, with a clear idea of what outcomes you want (just ticking a box which says training delivered is not an appropriate outcome!). You will need to factor in: • What outcomes you and the organisation want • What is the best approach to take- for some this might be lots of power point, for others in might be practical show and tell, for others eLearning. • What resources you have available eg do you have a suitable classroom or can you afford an all sign and dancing e-learning package? • Time constraints: is it practical to take a whole day off for a training session? • You need to monitor the trainees’ learning. You absolutely need some sort of test to conform that they have learned something at the end of the training or otherwise what is the point. • You also need to review the training itself. Was it any good? Did it deliver? • Follow up the training: has the training had any effect on what people do? Do they need refresher training? Or you just tick the box “ training delivered”!
