Hello all,
I was hoping you would be able to help me, as i am unsure if this incident is RIDDOR Reportable.
A child at a primary school has recievd a head bump whilst using a piece of outdoor play equipment. This is a bar for swinging from. The child was taken direcly to hospital but her parents and received a CT scan of he brain. This is all the information we have at present. Would you say that a CT scan is classed as 'treatment' at hospital outlined in RIDDOR for schools.
Many Thanks for you help

A CT Scanner is a device used to help diagnose a condition i.e. an examination technique - it is not a "treatment" The scanner can help medical professionals identify non-visible injury such as brain swelling / bleed - only if they then follow this up with an operation / medication would the child have been treated

And would only then be reportable if there was a fault with the equipment.

I believe that this would not be reportable as per HSE guidance
http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/edis1.pdf
Injuries to pupils and visitors who are involved in an accident at school or on an activity organised by the school are only reportable under RIDDOR if the
accident results in:
■ an injury that arose out of or in connection with a work activity and the person is taken directly from the scene of the accident to hospital for treatment (examinations and diagnostic tests do not constitute treatment).

I would like to continue this thread with another question relating to schools. A hypothetical scenario:
A school pupil is injured during a sports activity run by a third party sports company, the child fractures their arm and is taken to hospital. The questions to answer are:
1. Is this reportable under RIDDOR as a workplace accident (as the child could be considered a non-worker)?
2. Who is responsible, the school or third party company?
3. Incidentally, if a pupil is taken away from the scene of any accident at a school, disregarding a third party involvement, is this still RIDDOR reportable?
This was asked on a recent first aid course, accident books and first aid kits are in place. I highlighted the need for the company to establish responsibilities with school etc.
Any support on this greatly appreciated.

Pikeman has already given the correct advice regarding accidents at schools.
Unfortunately, your questions cannot be answered as there is no information on how (the hypothetical) injury occurred as this has a major bearing on the requirements to report.
Just because there was a fracture injury, does not make it reportable where non workers are involved.
