Hi all,

I work at a large university and have reviewed our various H&S policies as well as drafting new ones. However while this is all well and good, they are worthless unless folk are using and adhering to them.

In short I would like to increase aware of them, promote them if you will, thus far I have used the H&S committee meetings and staff bulletins but was wondering if anyone else had any tips on this??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Russ I think this is a problem we all face in this industry, we are very good at producing new and amended documents but not so good at ensuring personnel are familiar with them. So, I suggest you make sure they are easily accessible via an intranet site and health and safety section. You may need to do a presentation or workshop to promote the h&s section. Ideally documents should use hyperlinks so it is easy for the end-user to navigate from one document to another. New starters should especially be given a heads-up so they know from the off where to refer to documents they may need. You might think about doing an internal audit to see how many people are aware of the h&s documents, how often they use them, do they find them useful, user-friendly, etc. Finally, when carrying out accident/incident investigations include whether those who were involved or their immediate Line Manager were familair with the policies and procedures related to the incident - probably not!
