Good Morning All,

I have been asked to do an hour presentation on H&S with our 30 apprentices on our upcoming apprentice day in our head office.  We are a leading M&E construction firm in the UK.

I was just wondering if anyone had done something similar in the past and what you though would be good to cover.

Also if anyone has any good videos etc they could share that would be great.

Many Thanks

David - i'll be brief as I'm known to waffle...

We're currenlty looking at what to include for our design and mechaincal apprentices on H&S - and whilst we'll cover all the usual aspects such as Sec 6 stuff and the role of desingers - we found that whilst general safety management is well understood, can be seen and can be easily described - 'design safety' was not so easy to see nor put your finger on. Its a good talking point and it may prompt some good discussion. The below video was done by Laing O'Rourke and its a really good easy watch to set the scene...

one hour in one go is to much as people, especially youngsters, will switch off  - My advice is to put a case to management to install 'bite sized' chunks of H&S and connect it to specific jobs activities, people etc.              best of luck

I agree with Bob, unless you can introduce something. I did something with Staffoedshire fire and police around driving called Crash course, what beetr than introducing this to all them youngsters just getting behind the wheel

Could you do a "safety walk" with them in the areas they will start off in and discuss the hazards / risks / control measures in the areas?  (Do you have apprentices from previous years who could also be involved?)

1 hour doesn't sound like much to be honest, but I agree in an hour you can lose audiences espsecially the young who don't necessarily see importance.  (Sorry for the generalisation)

People here are talking about an hour being a long time to keep attention - not if it is interesting and relevant. Most movies are at least 1.5-2 hours long and an episode of GoT is an hour.

But like a good drama you need to pace it and put in a mixture of things. A short video with a strong message followed by some hard-hitting facts and then questions: what would you do if you spotted a fire? ...found a colleague collapsed? Etc.

Maybe add some group working on a subject.

Keep things moving along. Pace things out to flow, a power point presentation bookended, by activities and videos. Pick out key topics. Also as has been suggested, perhap a walkround at the end to emphasize your teachings.

Don't make it dry by conducting an hour of death by powerpoint. Have them coming out of your presentation feeling engaged and empowered. Basically have fun with the subject and they will have fun too.

Some thoughts.

What about a hazard spotting competition? Set up a photo from a height on several hazards in say a plant room or a workshop and see how many hazards they will spot. Bar of Choc to winner?

Ask what they think of the H&S management process? Do they understand it? How would they improve it? They may not be there sufficiuently long to be tainted by the norms of the environment?

How do they think safety should be pitched to Apprentices?

Have they had any near misses?
