Hi All

Have any of you used the Ice Alert signs that change colour when there is the risk of icy conditions?

If you have how have you found them?

Thanks

GB

I tend to look outside and if I need a coat and I am really cold, I think .... MMMM it may be icey. Take it easy Dave.

Seriously though why do you need these?

On our sites we have the ever unpredictable members of the public. We were discussing how to manage over the winter when we have ice and snow etc. and somebody mentioned these signs. I believe previously (i haven't been here during winter yet) when it is frosty or icy we have relied on staff to put signs up asking the public to take extra care. These signs would remove the need for our staff to decide if the conditions warrant signs or not.

Just trying to get an idea if they work and peoples thoughts really.

Whether questions of whether to grit or not to grit has also been raised!

We have a cold weather action plan which basically says when the temperature drops below a certain level, then it will activate our gritting plan. (We use contractors to grit). I know the signs you mean though but have never used them.

If you look outside and realise that you need to wear a coat (indoors) then you need to fix your central heating!

But seriously

If you have site which is any significant size you will realise that the level of frost can vary. A sheltered hollow might be really icy while somewhere near a busy (and significantly warmer road) might be ice free.

Positioning signs like this make it easier for security staff and the like to note that there is risk of ice and to take action eg call up a gritter without having to get the Health and Safety bod out of bed (it is coldest at dawn)  just to confirm that the carpark or where ever requires de-icing.
