The book 'Human Factors in the Chemical and Process Industries. Making it work in practice', ed Janette Edmonds, Reed Elsevier. 2016, was published this month. As the title indicates, the distinctive purpose of the book is to set out and explain how the science of ergonomics and human factors has become an integral part of managing occupational safety and health in process industries.
In doing so, chapter five offers a clear and authorittive account of the roles of both goal-setting and prescriptive regulatory regimes across the English-speaking world. The authors quote the viw of the Australian safety sociologist Anderw Hopkins that risk managemen and risk compliance are complimentary.
Overall, the writers who contributed to the book offer an informative guide to talancing leadership and technical competence which can be applied far beyond the process industries they draw on for illustrations.
