Are there any hard and fast rules for tool box talks? The reason I ask is that the company I work for have electrical and mechanical engineers who are basically out of the building all week, working on numerous sites making it difficult for supervisors to deliver TBT's.. My question is, can it be considered acceptable for  employees to be sent the information via ipads and they sign and return once they have read it. This way we can be assured they are receiving the information necessary. Any questions can be referred to the relevant department. My thoughts are that I'd know they were receiving information on a regular basis instead of an ad hoc approach.

Other more formal training programmes are in place and employees would be brought into the business for this.

Thank you

All you are achieving is confirmation staff have received the TBT. But the whole purpose is for staff to read AND understand the content of the TBT. Training must be effective, otherwise it is a waste of time

Yes I understand that. I thought to include some questions at the end of the topic to establish their level of understanding. The current process doesn't work so I need to find a suitable alternative.

I work with a Local Authority Direct Works Dept and they have decided to deliver TBTs to their site workforce on a face to face basis by bringing each team back to base on one specific day. Each team has its time slot and whilst is does disrupt workflow for that day they recognise that the information and instruction can only be effective if it received adequately by those that are exposed to the risks.

Yes, I agree all staff should have the opportunity to attend team meetings, for H&S and also for technical updates and customer feedback, this normally applies to sales staff and equally it should be provided to service staff, electricians, maintenance etc etc

Yes of course it can be acceptable and asking questions that they have to answer will at least show they know what has been read.

Who is to say anyone is listening just because you call them into the office and give the talk face to face.

As you are using I pads to deliver information maybe a good idea would be  web ex presentations, you can deliver the talk personally to a number of teams at multiple locations, also take a role call of employees that have attendended. This will allow you to give spacific information on the desired topic, also link this with your questionaire and it may give you what you need. I am about to start a new role and this will be one of the issues i will face due to the logistics of the team i am also considering facetime as a means of communication.
