We have a 3 story car park, open on all sides, the car park is only linked to the main building by a concrete outdoor walkway with balustrade on the 1st and 2nd floor.  It’s a relatively new build (within the last 5 years) and was fitted with a number of powder fire extinguishers, as you can imagine being near a town center, these get frequently vandalised. Is there any requirement to have firefighting appliances in multi-storey car parks?

If there is, I’m wondering if the appliances could be installed just inside the lobby area at each level and a sign displayed on each floor of the car park indicating the location of the appliance.

Thanks

Andrew

Andrew,

I can't see the point to have Fire Extinguishers in the car park, The only thing thats going to catch fire is the car, and should this happen i would like to concentrate in removing as many people away from the floor and call the FB.

A vechicle fire is one of the most dangerous fires you can get because of risk of Explosion, Even the Police are not allowed to try and put it out even though they carry fire extinguishers in their cars (For own Use i'm guessing)

I would Remove the Extinguishers and Put notices in there place showing the Quick and Prompt evacuation from the floor with the fire and contacting the FB whould would have the correct breathing apparatus and means to extinguish the fire.

Your main thing to do is ensure people know what to do in the event of a fire, They need to evacuate from the Building asap because of the Toxic Smoke and explosion risks

Instead of fire extinguisher it'll be better if you place a fire monitoring system or fire sprinkler (http://www.fire-monitoring.com/fire-alarm-monitoring/). I say this because it can be a precaution to further fire.

I would just add to what Gerry wrote that in a car park a single car on fire would very quickly spread to a second car if in close proximity so it is more important to be quick with the evacuation.

Cut backs in local authority funding mean fire appliances are fewer and further away therefore attendance times are increased.

Don't be surprised if you have to wait more than 8 minutes for the first fire engine.

In my opinion.
