Please can anyone give me guidance on legal braking requirements for metalwork lathes.  I have two lathes that are being retrofitted with interlocking guarding, however one of the machines is not able to have any braking device fitted because of its age.

What is the legal requirement on this please?

There is no legal requirement to retrofit braking to a metal working lathe.

The requirement to fit braking to spindles on wood machinery is to ensure the cutters stop between the time the machine is stopped by one user, and a second user approaching the machine to make adjustments or modifications to the cutters.

Whilst it is advantageous for the spindle to stop quickly, the variety of rotating masses that can be held in a typical centre lathe, the braking would need adjustment for several ranges, and if it was set to stop the greatest inertial load, then in all probability it would start to stop, once.

Then, you would be looking for another lathe.
