Does anyone have a safe system of work for using a ligature knife, all staff will recive the appropriate training but I am looking for the safe system of work that can be held or displayed in staff rooms.

I have the risk assessment I have just finished so thought one of my nice comrades will share the SSOW with me, with pictures please.

It's a curved knife they use to cut a ligature from your neck if your hanging. Thanks for that because they are used for other things.

Wouldn't a ligature knife be used more than likely in an emergency situation? i know that there is training in this equipment, but a SSOW for ligature knife - really not sure about that. can you actually have a SSOW for an emergency situation? - not sure that you really can (as all emergencies can differ greatly). Just sharing the thought - apologies if I'm off base here!

Your right in some ways but the reason for it is it is more of an 'tool box talk' for want of a better phrase. It's like anything you don't use often i.e. first aid but the fundamentals are the same, check area to ensure your safety etc.

Using a knife is the same principal, check they have not used live wires as the ligature, check ground for slip hazards,  are they hanging or lying down, how to hold the body so that you don't hurt yourself and how to use the knife so that you do not hurt them further 'if they are still alive of course' etc.

Invictus, tried to drop you a PM but it said your inbox is full.  I have a procedure on the safe use of a ligature knife if it is of interest.

Cheers,

Martin

HMPS used to have SSOW on this equipment - used to also form part of safer custody training.  Y ou may not be able to get a copy as protected by the Crown?
