Have set up a new H&S Committee on a non-unionised site. Can anyone suggest some training courses at reasonable cost for the team. Thanks

Hi morraphael,

We trained all of our safety reps in IOSH managing safely. Enjoyable course and they all found it very valuable. There are a number of providers who offer this training, so you should be able to get something fairly local to yourself too.

Best regards

Rick

I would not recommend IOSH Managing Safely for this - however 'enjoyable' people may find it. It is aimed at managers (only) and not even much good for that IMHO.

I would investigate RoSPA et al, and aim for a course which focusses on the roles and process of such a committee. Avoid union-biased training, although good, these will not be the right 'flavour' for non-unionised and 'all in this together' new committee members.

They want to be able to develop their own objectives, ToR, agendas, and processes, as well as clarify worker / manager roles. Also be able to access and use sources such as HSE, not get bogged down in regulation as such just an overview, and be open to new ideas.

The chair will also need skills (with support from SP?), so that input is managed, and output / conclusions of meetings are clear and SMART if possible.

There's your training programme framework . . .

Assuming the numbers warrant it I would design my own in-house course tailored specifically for your needs - far more interesting me thinks.

I previously used the RoSPA course with very positive feedback from the delegates particularly those who are new to H&S - the course content provided the knowledge they needed to perform their role without going into too much depth.
