Now the beans advert has been banned due to health and safety concerns, as the tins are eopn and some people may make a mistake and cut themselves by playing the tin the wrong way round.

I know on here there will actually be people who agree, you couldn't make it up. Well you could because the advertising standards authority up held the compliants. Who's worse us or the parents who complained.

Indeed. I would have banned it too.

But solely on the basis of it being one of the most annoying adverts on telly.........

This is one of those cases where we need to see the minutes of the meeting where this was decided. Was it based on a detailed analysis of accident data followed by extensive consultation with experts including the HSE or was it case of “ooh someone could hurt themselves and we’ll be in trouble: let’s ban it!”

We need to know the facts!

I've always had my doubts about that product.

Anything that can produce that much gas when processed must be inherently dangerous and not a safety warning to be seen.

Are we talking about Baked Beans or IOSH here?

Absolutely ridiculous ruling.  Anyone who has had kids knows that, as a parent, you need to be responsible for your kids' health and safety.  You cannot ban everything and I think that the watchdog is totally wrong on this and blaming health and safety when, as the HSE says, there is no regulation that covers this.

Madder than a box of frogs ...

“The ad must not be broadcast again in its current form. We told HJ Heinz Foods UK Ltd to ensure that future ads did not condone or encourage behaviour that prejudiced HEALTH AND SAFETY, including behaviour that could be dangerous for children to emulate, for example by including a clear on-screen safety message such as “Play safe: tape the can”.”

That is a quote from the adjudication: Isn’t time we introduced a Law (it has to be a Law, cos everybody follows Laws) so that nobody can use the expression H&S until they have:

  • A NEBOSH Diploma
  • CMIOSH
  • At least turned up at work at 6:00 to explain to the cleaners why they must not unplug equipment so that they can use their vacuum cleaners(in Polish)
  • Explained to the Board of Directors why near miss reporting is a “good thing”
  • Explained to someone(for the twelfth time)  why you can’t just put it down the drain
  • Explained to  a VIP why they should wear the same PPE as everybody else on the site
  • Been warned  by the moderators from the IOSH forum
  • Explained to someone after work that H&S really is quite important but I has to be done in a proportionate manner, while not strangling the prat

I was with you all the way until you mentioned CMIOSH as though this is a real level of compentency.

It was probably someone with CMIOSH and holds the dipolma (do you mean or equivalent?) who advised them.

Nothing to do with either HSE or IOSH, this is not about occupational health and safety which is what should concern them, it is about public safety.  HSE had no business commenting.

Health and safety isn't about feelings ... until you sever a nerve.

...said a colleague in my office in reference to this advert.

Hmmmmm criticise the CMIOSH eh.  Discrimination if ever I saw it

ha ha ha.

Many many years ago we comminicated using the tin cans and string and nobody died, or even got injured and I "can" tell you all those cans were really hazardous due to the can openers we had to use way back then.

I am/was a drummer and because, unlike the guitarists,  I couldn't carry my drum kit to the pub when we were having a sing song, I utilised whatever was available. Metal waste bin (emptied of course).  Metal tray, glasses in various points of emptyiness, played with knife and fork.  What a brilliant sound I made, but how dangerous to use a KNIFE and FORK.  They are really dangerous objects and have been known to actually KILL people.  I was never banned for being a healt hazard, only occasionally told to play quieter but usually everyone joined in.

The most dangerous advert I CAN remember is Pringles where people played the end of an empty Pringle tub with their bare hands.

All Pringles has to be eaten first - how bad is that.  What a health hazard that is.

Conkers bonkers once again.

CMIOSH is more a feeling of self-aggrandizement than a measure of competence (joke?)

PS it was the ASA that used the phrase Health and Safety not anybody here (as if we would take H&S in vain)

And developed to a fine art whinging about how badly we poor, misunderstood health and safety "professionals" are treated

On the basis of the ASA findings, every mobile phone advert and many car adverts presumably also breach the code. None of the ads I've watched tell you not to walk into a road while staring at a screen, or muck about with a car "info screen" whilst driving.

Interactive screens on car dashboards should be banned IMO.

Maybe we should bombard the ASA with complaints?

Just danndy.  First my guitar string are taken from me in case I get jabbed by the short bits on the top-nut.  Now I don't get to practice my first aid skills putting the finger tips back on the grandchildren when I fish them out of the tins (finger tips not the grandchildren of course).  These is no fun anymore!

What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine?

With a drum machine, you only have to punch the instructions in once......

They will be banning McDonalds adverts soon for making people fat because people cannot be accountable for their own actions anymore.

You can't call yourself a guitarist unless you've got pin hole scars on your fingers (..or nearly had your eye out !) from changing the top "e" !   :-)

McDonalds, for elf'' n safety reasons have refused to hand out balloons to drivers who go through the Drive Through in case the balloon obstructs the driver's vision. No such refusals for the walk in customer who take the balloon home in their car.
