Good afternoon,

My organisation are looking to dismantle a section of racking and then re assemble it in a different part of the factory.

I have advised that anyone doing this should be SEMA trained or it should be undertaken by the manufacturer.

My advice is being questioned, please could someone advise further?

Many thanks

See the SEMA response to a similar query on their website: http://www.sema.org.uk/information/faq-s/?1483977832865

Might help back your initial response up.

Just noticed the link doesn't take you to the actual question so just select "racking" from the section drop down and "Relocating racking" from the subject drop down then click search.

There is only one resulting discussion.

Hi thanks for this,

I have already seeen this but unfortunately it only really states that individuals need to be competent. So this stems to the usual question of how do I demonsrate competency if not SEMA trained, also would the SWL change if moved?

If you use the link at #2 and look for 'competency' in the drop down box you will get a woolly answer on the subject.

Just moving racking isn't as easy as it sounds- do the people know who to square and level the runs? Are the beams at the same heights as before- as that could have an effect on the weight loading.

I had the same issue here a few months ago- We used SEMA qualified person in the end.

Hope this helps

Andy

Warehouse/ Pallet racking is not something you should mess around with. Racking collaspes kill people. You need to be absolutely sure who ever moves and re installs the racking is fully competent. I personally would only use SEMA quailified personal for such a job. Its really not worth the risk to do otherwise.

Remember your racking may also come under statutory inspections by insurance inspectors.  If dismantled and re-installed eslewhere it should ideally be done so by a trained competent person in order to meet insurance requirements.  Otherwise inspectors would have the right to question its stability/installation etc and may not cover through insurance or fail it on inspection.

Hi

You should use a competent contractor. I would look for SEMA or a simialr EU standard, and for them to be part of a contractor scheme, l;ike Safe Contractor. Ensure their RAMS are correct and that they follow them.

Once erected on the new site they will need to be signed off and correct safety plates (ref number, SWL, safety messages, etc) and load notice on the ends of the racks.

If your advice is being questioned then get some examples of racking collapses from around the UK (HSE and press cuttings) to show your senior managers. Also, do a risk assessment in writting and explain this to them.

One thing that no-one else has said is that this will becovered by CDM 2015 as it is the dismantiling and erecting of a structure, so you will need to go through all your client duties with the contractor and get a safety file at the end of it.

PM me if you need further advice or want some recommended contractors from me.

Ian
