Dear Participants, hope you all are doing well.

I am struggling to find an IQA(Internal Quality Auditor) for my upcoming EFAW and FAW training courses. My awarding body is Highfield-HABC. I tried to get help from them but they say they really can't help on it due to the conflict of interest thing and I totally understand that.

Could anybody please advise me where can I get an IQA?

Kindest regards

Fareed

Hi John,

Many thanks for your response.

IQA(Internal Quality Auditor) who conducts a part of assessment in First Aid courses. An instructor can't be an IQA at the same time. IQA is appointed by training organisation who can spend some time during training and complete assessment process.

Hope it was helpful.

Since the rework of the forum we seem to have lost some basic poster information e.g. location, sectors that allow respondents to consider their answers and comments. Reading the post are you giving or receiving the training? it isn't as clear as it could be If receiving them assessment of the course is not something you need to be concerned with. If a provider which regulator requires a "quality audit" of the provision? Ever the sceptic it sounds like you are being miss-directed to line someone elses pockets. Never heard of or saw an IQA at a StJohn's Ambulance FAAW course.

Hello,

It's still not entirely clear what it is that you are trying to do. Am I right in thinking that you are teaching a first aid course and that you are looking for an assessor to carry out the required assessment?

If this is the case then you have been misinformed. The delivery of FAW and EFAW no longer requires seperate assessment and the instructor must hold a teaching and assessing qualification in addition to a in date certificate in the subject being taught. There is a number of qulaifications suitable for this but the norm is the 'Level 3 Award in Education and Training' which replaced the PTLLS course.

There are alot of requirements around the training and assessment of first aid courses. The HSE's GIS3 details what you need to consider and further information can be found in L74.

You will struggle to find somebody to assess only. As a trainer and assessor myself I would not assess and sign off any training had I not delivered the training myself. There are a number of reasons for this but put simply: a) I don't want liablity for any errors made in the delivery of the training and; b) this wouldn't make good business sense.

Hi Fareed,

I am an IQA but I am registered with Nuco only. I am not sure if I can carry out your assessment with Highfield without being registered with them too, which if I am honest is not something I want to do.

If you have still not found anybody go to Facebook and search and register on the First Aid Instructors page. There will be someone on there who can assist with your monitoring session and will be local as well. Any problems PM me and I will try and assist.

All,

In addition to undertaking an instructor update course every three years, all first aid instructors MUST also have a monitoring session carried out on them by someone suitably qualified - this is usually another first aid instructor who has a level 4 assessing qualification or has undertaken a CPD workshop with the awarding body. It has nothing to do with the assessment of delegates.

The above does not apply to St John Ambulance or the British Red Cross at present. If you are a first aid instructor with any other organisation/awarding body and have not had your annual monitoring session carried out you should not be teaching first aid until it has been completed - your awarding body will be able to advise.

Regards

Clive

I am an IQA too, based in Nottingham - where are you?  I am registered with AoFA, and I am assuming if Highfield work the same you need to register who you IQA is.  I am happy to do it for you if you wish, if you want to PM me the relevant forms I will send you the relevant certs so you can register me.

Let me know if you still need someone, it is difficult, I struggle to get an IQA for my courses too because you can't IQA your own.

What gives you the impression that you can't assess your own first aid courses?

If highfield are telling their trainers this, quite simply they are wrong.

I've just figured out where this misunderstanding is. Guidance Infomation Sheet 3 the HSE's Guide to "Selecting a first-aid training provider" states that [paragraph 16] "a suitable and documented quality assurance plan designating an individual to take responsibility for quality assurance, including assessment of the skills of trainers/assessors at least annually. This ‘designated person’, who can be from inside or outside the organisation, should be independent of training delivery and demonstrate competence for their role"

This refers to IQA of the entire assessment process not the assessment of the first aid trainees. Paragraph [15] does say that "A training organisation may use different individuals to train and assess students and they should hold qualifications appropriate for their role." This is an option not a requirement.

The same person can both train and assess their students!

It would be deeply worrying if a large and respected organisation such as Highfield are telling people that you need an independant assessment of trainees. If this is the case then i could only conclude that this is about generating extra income.

Can the OP confirm if they are looking for an assessor to assess their trainees or is it to carry out an annual assessment (monitoring) of the trainer/assessor?

ang is not saying they cannot Assess their own courses, but that the IQA cannot be the assessor.

You are either the assessor or the IQA. Therefore you cannot undertake IQA duties on qualifications you have personally assessed.

I get that but it seems that what the OP is confused between IQA and assessment of trainees. (The reference to upcoming courses) IQA (monitoring) only needs to be carried out in one session per annum.
