Hello all

We've been having a heated debate about a potential activity where a small quantity of melittin (derived from bee venom) would be diluted in its original vial within a fume cupboard and subsequently used as a test solution for instrumentation.  Its not actually going to be used now as an alternative substance has been found.

The debate became heated due to concerns that the handling of melittin could result in someone having an anaphylatic reaction.  Interestingly the SDS (and I looked at several from different suppliers) makes no reference that melittin may be cytotoxic so I'm wondering whether there is a real risk or just a perception.

If there is a concern, what kind of control measures would need to be employed above and beyond the fume cupboard?  I'm thinking that people would need to be warned and asked to declare any known allergies for instance.

A bit of a technical question I guess so I wouldn't expect a flood of responses!  However, if anyone has any thoughts I would be insterested in reading them.

Cheers

The problem with allergic reactions is that anybody might be allergic to anything. If someone has demonstrated allergy to a particular substance in the past I would not allow them to work with that substance at all. If have done this for people who have an allergy to penicillin let’s say.

For substances that are seriously cytotoxic I’d look at working in a specialist cabinet. Essentially this would be a modified Class III Microbiological safety cabinet.
