Hi all, Has anyone produced an overseas travel policy, if so, would you have any example of a procedure for dealing with missing/uncontactable staff members.
By that I mean, an action plan which kicks in, in such circumstances.

Hi Russ,
We have people overseas in extreme risk areas (though not that many) and we do have an overseas security framework. People travelling to high risk areas are fully briefed before travel, and they are always expected to be accompanied and supported by delegates from our local partner organisations. They are expected to check in with a designated person in the UK regularly, if they miss a check -in we give them 4 hours and then the escalation process kicks in. We have a security manager and they convene a crisis response team, which then sets off contacting FO, next of kin and so on. I can't send our documents to you I'm afraid as they're not mine,
John

What sort of fieldwork in what countries? Obviously looking at daisies in the South of France is different from counting snow leopards in Afghanistan. You situation is also relevant. Does the company have an office manned 24/7 or do you work strictly 9-5 Monday to Friday? There are companies who will monitor your staff 24/7 via their mobile phones anywhere in the world (for a fee). What sort of insurance will you be using? Basic tourism type insurance is not applicable for work related risks. Do you want to include the price medical airlift back to the UK? What about ransom payment? Have you informed the embassy where you are going that you might be doing fieldwork? They can provide advice but don’t expect them to send a gunboat or to arrange medivac? There is IOSH guidance on overseas travel available and I can PM you something that Universities use.

The sort of work differs to be honest and is largely outside of Europe and quite often in very dicey regions. We have a policy that is quite robust in terms of insurance, risk assessments, guidance, internaries etc but I would like some guidance on what do to if someone does go missing, an example of a action plan etc would be great. I would be very interested to see anything that you can PM, please.
