Hi

We are relocating our Gas cylinder storage cages nearer to the diesel tanks. The diesel tanks are used for refuelling mobile plant.

Types of Gas cylinders stored include Acetylene, propane, oxygen.

What is the recommended separation distance that should be between diesel tank and gas cylinder storage?

Is 3 meters the recommended distance?

Is fire wall or blast wall required?

Any advice appreciated

following the hierrachy of controls, I think we need to go by avoiding the FL near the gases- moreso , Oxygen and acetylene are involved.

I dont from which standard you reference 3 metres distance, but the gases cylinders  themselves require 20 feet distance apart and wall thickness of  not less than 1/4 inches

No direct mention of Diesel tanks or similar, but the document below does give the 3m distance between bottles ( never heard of 20 feet). There may be some other helpful info in there if you read it all.

BCGA guidance note 2 GN2

there is also BCGA code of practice 44 which also give separation distances, but again didn't see diesel noted.

I downloaded them free from their site

The distance is apart is a function of the storage area- open or closed. Guidelines must have specified the proximity of storage to other property , the quantity stored etc. So, there exists a guideline wherein 20ft is recommended and which is being used here; probably because it is near to gas plant etc.

Rufai

It would be helpful to the original poster if could identify the standard you are quoting from. Guess not UK as we went metric decades ago.

Thanks for the above advice. It’s greatly appreciated

The general guidance I was reviewing was the BCGA  COP 44 the  storage of Gas Cylinders

I think Chris mentioned this –Thanks.

3 meter rule seems to be the norm an a manufacturing site
