Can anyone recommend an accelerometer they use to assess the magnitude of vibrating equipment?

Reactec pods or HAVi watch type products are recommended

These are fancy programmable stop watches. They do not measure the magnitude of vibration.

Hi James, purchased equipment from above in a previous life.  There are the options of having triaxial accelerometers either strapped directly to the tool or to be worn by the operator, depending on whether you wish to measure actual vibration magnitude on a tool by tool basis or by personal exposure.

I had previously looked to outsource measurement, but most providers kept getting rejected by management on the basis of cost.  Managed to convince them of this option on the basis of "future proofing" things to an extent  i.e. one off cost of the kit vs bringing in third parties multiple times if our processes ever changed.

In terms of competence of the person carrying out the measurements however, I was never 100% clear on what would pass muster.  A colleague informed me that the kit providers tend to offer seminars on how to use it, but my gut tells me that this would not be enough.  I know the HSE run their own courses from time to time and the BOHS have one or two.  Unfortunately, I left that job before I was able to find out, hope this helps though.

We always used the same kit that the HSE use and were trained by the HSE - not cheap but good and as for bringing people in U need to ensure competence not just cheapness

Save your cash and don't get bogged down in the Reactec / Havi stopwatch scenario, we used such equipment and still needed to use a Svantek 106 to confirm actual vibration magnitude.

Currently using Havsco HavSense, recording is good, software and base station can be awkward but definitely workable.

Whichever way i'm sure you will be aware of ensuring you keep those records a long time!

Regards

Nick
