COMAH Site - Visit to Whiskey Bottling plant
Rank: Forum user

I'm going to be visiting a whiskey bottling plant in a few weeks time and looking to swat up on the site and operational requirements of a bottling plant that comes under COMAH. Can anyone direct me to any H&S information that will cover the site and operational requirements? Thanks Martin

Bottling plant itself unlikely to be COMAH, even less likely to be top tier.
Most of the whisky COMAH sites are bonded warehouse complexes. The Scotch Whisky Association published standards to be adopted at such sites many years ago.
Long since out of print but HSE published sector report "The Drinks Industry - Health and Safety 1975-81". You might find it in a library.

Thanks Petter, I'll have a look for that. The site I'm going to have confirmed that they are a lower tier comah site and they have bottling lines

Funnily enough, when chatting with an HSE inspector a couple of weeks ago on my site, during a COMAH visit, he mentioned he had been spending time in Scotland looking at Whisky distilleries because they do fall under COMAH. Can't recall if he said why, may be something to do with the volume of alcohol and the environmental effects thereof, but deffo COMAH

Also if you know the correct title of the company of if they are within 2 miles of your postcode you can look to see if they have COMAH status at
https://notifications.hse.gov.uk/COMAH2015/Search.aspx
It's the bonded warehouse complexes that tend to store the most spirits and we have the largest top tier site in Western Europe sitting alongside the Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine railway line.
Before COMAH and its predecessor CIMAH, we had the Fire Precautions (Special Premises) Regulations made in 1976 if my memory recalls. HSE was the enforcing authority and I dealt with fire certification of some bonded warehouses a very long time ago!
