Hi all, I would really appreciate some examples of how you guys have promoted H&S in your work places. I have produced policies, procedure and guidance docs galore, all of which are available on our intranet. I use notice boards, regular committee meetings etc but want to do more.
Essentially if these policies etc are not used they're next to useless. Obviously some of the items are mandatory and people have to sign that they've read and understood them etc but I like to further promote H&S, be a bit more proactive as it were.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Hi It depends on what your employees and managers need. What are your accident rates like? Can you work with managers when they have completed an investigation on how to implement an improvement plan to stop future accidents? What are your key risks? Are they adequately controlled? If not then get together with the senior manager responsible for H&S and work together to get the management team controlling the risks. What aspects of H&S do you want to highlight? The design a campaign around that. Get into management meetings, get onto the shop floor and talk to people about it, rather than get them to come to a committee. And make it relevant and specific.

How often do you get out and about and talk to employees, what is your attitude to H&S is one of this has to be done these are the reasons why and I have told, you or do you converse and encourage, do you support managers and staff instead of jumping down their throats. I was given a compliment this morning, when I was pulled to one side by a manager who said 'I was terrified of H&S, R/A's etc until you came, your relaxed, have a laugh and put it into perspective, nothing ever to much trouble and your always willing to assist. If we get it wrong you'll support us to get it right and more than that you don't try and make out that you know everything' That's the first time in nearly 20 years anyone has said that, so I think after 20 years I have finally realised being an ass doesn't always get results.

I agree with Invictus, in the 18 years I have been doing the job, I have also come across the H&S "clipboard Nazis" they never get results, they just upset people. I have seen it so many times where people genuinely hate them due to their "too late I already wrote the ticket" traffic warden behaviour and they just don't get results. I have always worked the same way as Invictus just said and it really pays off, get in amongst the staff, have a laugh and a joke with them and when they ask you a question that you don't know the answer to just reply with "dunno, you would be better off asking Google than me" that way they know that they can come to you with potential problems without fear of you "grassing them up" and that you are in fact a human being. When you are explaining policies to them explain it to them in a language that they understand and will respond to. For example I work in civils and the only way to get them to listen is chuck in a load of swear words, they feel that you are explaining things to them on their level and will absorb it. You obviously need to tailor your delivery to different audiences, but it does work.

To answer the question as I see it "how to promot H&S in the workplace".
I agree with everything posted so far, lots of basic must do things. To go one step further to "promote" we run safety days or weeks [next once commencing Monday 19th June]. So, we look to promote themes where we engage with staff at a work and home / sociable level. For example during safety week we will be running "open" basic first aid courses, basic fire safety including extinguisher demos, webnairs on safe driving, advice for safe cycling (as we have a big % of staff who cycle), basic cycle maintenance classes.
You get the picture. We work with the business to ensure that what we plan will not bring the buisness to a standstill.
It reals works, we have a tremendous safety culture and staff KNOW we actually give a damn!
Just my perspective.

We do a couple of things for this. A H&S committee was established as a forum for employees to air their views or concerns or ideas etc (selected members of departments) but without any senior management there, as in the past this seemed to uncomfortable for staff to speak up. This has worked well but only if there are achievable objectives set for each quarter for the whole committee .i.e encouraging all staff to report any and all accidnets etc. The other thing is the staff induction, we do this annually now and I'm thinking about going 6 monthly. Our staff induction leans heavily on getting across staff/employee roles and responsibilites but there are elements in there regarding the companies commitment to H&S and a safe working environment for all. Encouraging committee members to speak with their staff and engage in issues is key, promoting the company as wanting and willing to develop H&S. Resources is another key issue, staff like to see the company investing in H&S i.e PPE, Equipment, Welfare facilities etc. If the staff see the company investing then in my experience they get on board also and tend to buy into the whole health & safety culture!
