Hi. Our company is going to remove asbestos panels from the roof. Obviously looking for contractor to do it. Can you please advise what do we need from potential contractors to give them permit to work - their risk assessment, method statement, etc? I ve never dealt with asbestos removal yet. Thank you

First off, I must say that I am by no means an expert on Asbestos removal; however I was also recently involved with a similar situation for the first time and saw the process in action.

The contractor will have to outline the way in which they will physically remove the Asbestos from the area - for example having a sealed tunnel leading directly to a skip so that no fibres can escape into the air around the work. They will also make arangements for someone on your end to witness a smoke test (this is where a smoke machine is placed inside the sealed work area and it is visually checked from outside the enclosure to ensure no smoke can escape). The idea being that no smoke means no fibres.

Additionally, the contractor may bring a decontamination unit with them and will outline the requirements for locating it on site (and possibly hooking it up to mains power/generator). Once the work is complete an air test will take place to ensure no Asbestos is present in the work area.

I stand open to correction from more experienced members involved in Asbestos work though; this is just the experience I had a few months back when our company were having Asbestos tiles removed.

I hope this helps you.

What kind of panels are they? If it is for a licensed material then you will need to ensure that the contractor has a licence from the HSE.

The aforementioned asbestos removal process is for high risk work. Most asbestos removal involves a semi-controlled process i.e. low risk work. Typically asbestos cement (roof sheeting) is low risk work which can be done without the use of a licensed asbestos removal company. It does depend on the volume and to a lesser degree the condition of the asbestos cement panels, etc.
