Consider a small onsite composter ? At my site all our food waste from the canteen is composted and used on the gardens.

5 tonne per what period? what sort of food?

can you seperate stuff that would be subject to abp (meat & cooked with meat) from things that aren't?

is there any different buying you could do, either pre-prepared or make from scratch to provide less waste?

what about making soup from leftovers?

look at hugh's war on waste for ideas./follow hugh fearnley wittingstall on twitter

vegetable garden on site, as posted by someone else, composter, if school, get kids involved, dig vegetables into ground

for oil/fats, oils and grease seperator on water traps /outlets to prevent grease getting into sewerage outlets

water and liquid disposal seperate from food bins - you will see now in some mcdonalds and greggs outlets recently refurbished.

as it's all about the weigh, look at what's heavy and see if there's anything you can tackle with main items in bins, and get staff involved/thinking up ideas, including older members of staff, as would have happened at home, (prior to throw away society)

Eat More !

Ok perhaps not. But to help we need to know exactly how the waste is being generated. Is it food left over from people’s meals or are you some sort of food processing plant or what. Also what sort of food is it, vegetable waste, meat waste or mixture, is it just peelings for instance.

How is it generated and what is the waste exactly?

If you do it right you could even save money, but it depends on what it is.

You can make beer from waste bread! Donate to charity etc

If it is meals provided by the company, smaller portions? Or doggy bags. If it is people bringing their own food in and having eyes bigger than their bellies (I don’t have this problem sadly), then perhaps make them aware of the amount of food waste the company has to deal with and ask they only bring in what they need. To save half a tonne per year it a relatively small amount a week (10Kg)

Alternatively, to the other suggestions about composting, could the food waste go to somewhere local as animal feed? Apparently if used for this it is not classed as waste, but waste prevention.

there are also food waste collection services that operate in different areas of the country, depending on where you are, you will find someone who can do it, in addition I believe biffa had a national service, however i don't know the commercials on pricing in different areas.

You can in addition look to see if people will take their waste home with them, or if they are bringing in materials that are heavy - suggest refillable water bottles and jugs on tables so no need for drinks etc, water fountain and or water bottle and water dispensers - branded up perhaps, at some universities they now have vending machines with them in, and a dispenser of filtered cold water.

for the food, it is possible to look at what people aren't eating, and also to have a target to show how they are doing in terms of waste per week collected and show on a graph/powerpoint, figures could be provided by the supplier as usually they have bin weighers on vehicles, (access to data may be more difficult, but achieveable). - you could also weigh via putting bin on a set of scales night before the collection.

some sort of data that is shown, known and updated in a way that can get participation, and also standing by bin and talking to people about what they are throwing away and why.

could remove bins and make more visible when throwing stuff away, so that there is a sorting/recycling station area that they have to use, and then have a camera videoing what happens to see where change could be influenced, also a bin spread, in the car park with pictures to show what we are throwing away and see if it influences thinking.
