Hi, I'm a chartered member, diploma qualified (and NEBOSH Cert) but want to expand my Construction knowledge and undertake some formal construction related training.  I've been told not to complete the NEBOSH Constructio Cert as this repeats too much of what I've already done previously but am struggling to find a generalist construction course that will provide me with a complete overview of CDM / Construction in general.

I already have foundation knowledge in CDM so wanting to build on that.  Any suggestions gratefully received!!

As you already hold the qualifications/certificates you have - why do you need to go on further training courses?

I found CITB CDM courses to be very basic - barely worth the effort. Likewise APS CDM PD course was simply a guy regurgitating the CDM ACOP - which you can read yourself.

Self research/education is just as effective or must you have a formal certificate at the end?

There comes a point in your career that experience should tell you what you need to learn/where to find information.

I agree with the above post, the only thing I can think of which might enhance your construction knowledge and possibly lead to a CDM/PD type role is a Project Management qualification - see https://www.apm.org.uk/

I know other Chartered Members who gained a lot from the CITB Courses (Site Safety for Supervisors for example).

by the by, you aren't going to get a PD role unless you are a Designer.

Hi Evetts,

Being a chartered member i won't question why you feel the need to attend as i'm sure you're capable of making these decisions yourself. Besides, we all know that in this day and age many employers like to see plenty of stuff on your CV!

I've done both the NEBOSH general and NEBOSH construction and, if my memory serves me correctly, you are able to skip the overlapping parts if you've already completed the general (it was a long time ago so i may be mistaken). Even if this isn't the case, NEBOSH construction would still be in with a strong shout.

I did the CITB SMSTS maaaany years ago (before moving into H&S) and whilst it's far from perfect, it's widely recognised and would also give you a good insight into construction.

Good luck!
