I am putting together all the information we need to apply for CHAS certification. We currently have the COSHH assessment, risk assessment, method statement and safe system of work all in one document. We then have a health and safety policy which details ccident reporting, subcontractor assessment policy and can provide training courses for staff. Is there anything else that I might need?

The CHAS application process includes associated guidance accessed via www.chas.co.uk. This includes all the supporting evidence you need to submit to achieve accreditation. Make sure you do not submit blank document templates rather than completed examples as blank documents do not demonstrate implementation.

Do you have 18001? If you do you can complete a deemed to satify submission with your certifucate and last audt dated within the last 12 months. If not I have to say CHAS is a wee beastie. They ask lots of questions and will not under any circumstances accept a generic document. You will need to provide a lot of health suff (noise, vibration, surveillence) if you don't do them you have to put a valid reason why. You need you H&S director / senior managers CV AND his certifications / memberships to back that up. You need details of the senior team and there competencies, proceedures for RA, COSHH, SSOW, manual handing and completed examples (at least 3), if you do night work you need completed night worker assessments. The list goes on. Turn your phone and emails off and just plough through it. To be honest I hated doing the submission, rarely did we get through first pass, usually third with some discussion with the assessor. I used to have to complete it for 2 divisions, a month apart!

As prevously mentioned, there is plenty of help available on the CHAS website. Check it before you click submit. I have helped many clients through the process and although it can be time consuming, they are only asking for proof you as complying with legislation so you should be able to provide adequate proof. Treat it like an audit of your safety system. If you can't supply evidence then that could be pointing to a failure in your controls.
The only problem I have ever come across is inconsistency from assessors wher some accept the evidence provided when similar evidence from another client is rejected.

I had this! Evidence that was accepted one year was not accepted the following despite being updated! Very frustrating. Got through in the end though.

I have done several CHAS over the years, after a while you start to enjoy the challenges and robust nature of the process. The CHAS team in my opinion are superb at guidance and advice, it is no pushover though, it's a healthy challenge and great feeling of satisifaction when succesfully completed, enjoy the journey :-)

Maybe I am completely missing it but I can't see anything on the CHAS website that gives me guidance on what supporting documents I need to add. Can someone point me to the actual page on there that has that info?
