Does anyone know how many h&s regulations there are in the UK? I would like to use the number in training but cannot find a full and comprehensive list anywhere. I have heard before it is around 400 but have no way to back that claim up... Thanks in advance

Defining what an "H&S Regulation" actually is might be part of the problem. Obviously you could look for all regulations enacted under the Health and Safety at Work Act - perhaps an email to the House of Commons library would answer that (I've emailed them before and had helpful replies).

But there's plenty more which we consider to either be H&S regs, or have H&S implications - like the requirements related to accident books, which are in regs enacted under the Social Security Act.

If you have or can blag access to something like Barbour or IHS you might be able to make a list?

If you really want to do this I'd start with enabling Acts and work from there. Good luck!

I was going to mention both the above but quicker fingers were on the trigger.

The big issue as gramsay points out is the definition of what is a safety regulation? If you say it's a regulation enacted under the umbrella of the H&SAW Act (as per the HSE page given), you will get a totally different figure than if you include all the fire and public health regulations as well.

As people have said the definition of H&S regulations can be a bit vague but the following are links to those pieces of legislation that the HSE enforces:

Acts (in addition to Health and Safety at Work Act) are on http://www.hse.gov.uk/legislation/acts.htm

While Statutory Instruments (ie regulations)   are on http://www.hse.gov.uk/legislation/statinstruments.htm

Many people would also include fire safety Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 as H&S but this is enforced by the Fire Authorities (except for nuclear installations where the HSE deals with the issue)

as to how many you will have to count them!

And of course there will also be a whole host of industry specific legislation and regulations that will never apply to whatever business you are providing the training to.

For example, with the best will in the world I would struggle to see ho nuclear and offshore regulations might apply to training provided to the care sector, so should they really be counted in that course?

The correct answer is probably............none (?)

H&S Regulations are enacted in Great Britain. Northern Ireland have their own.

Dry stuff for training. The Government would have us believe there are thousands of regulations. For the purposes of their red tape challenge, they counted each individual Regulation within the Statute. Legally correct, but wholly misleading to the general public
