Can anyone recommended a good respiratory mask for staff spraying fibreglass?

Are they spraying something onto fibreglass? Spraying fibreglass itself is not a process that I have come across. More info is needed: What are they spraying? How long for? Ventilation set up? etc.etc.

Hi SNS They are directly spraying fibreglass with an adhesive onto pre-set forms, there is local ventilation and extraction syatems in place but the staff are not happy with full face masks and some staff are saying they wore different masks at their last place of work, we are trying to get a suitable mask that is compliant with the work they do to put an end to all the differences.

Thanks for the further info. I would suggest that you ask a couple of mask manufacturers to visit with their demonstration kits. 3M (no connection other than as a user) are very good at that, as are Cromwell etc. Sounds like you have the systems in place but are trying to satisfy the workers. There is nothing to say that the previous masks used eleswhere were the correct ones for the task but the may have been easier to use (or not). The HSE website has this http://www.hse.gov.uk/respiratory-protective-equipment/ in case you've not seen it before. As with all other things it will come down to a risk assessment, combined with coshh, management, cost and the workers accepting it. Good luck

Score, to add to what SNS has posted, it may be useful to involve the workers in the risk assessment process and understand what residual risks remain and what level of protection therefore needs to be made available. A choice of RPE generally results in a better pattern of usage. Personally, having been required to use RPE for only limited and intermittent periods I hated having to use it (and vision & hearing protection). I would detest having to do a job where it was a routine requirement.

And of course the masks will need to be face fit tested.
When they say they are not happy with them, what is it they don’t like about the current masks? Their fit, do they interfere with other PPE or don’t the just like the colour?
Are you sure that you need the RPE? You say that there other controls eg LEV
Are masks the best options or could you use a hood or pressurised visor?

Yes, it is good to involve your workers in the selection process I agree, but be mindful of COSHH, their perception of COSHH and them being told something that they don`t want to hear.
We use Sundstrom for many of the applications where paints, solvents and coatings are used.

It sounds like the 3M versaflo masks are what you are looking for, they can be fed with an airline or a personal pack worn on the belt.
