I am looking at reviewing our transport store delivery risk assessment and delivery guide and I need to focus on the procedure/process for single and double decker vehicles actually backing onto loading bays correctly.
For those of you who work in retail/distribution how does your transport department manage the delivery in regards to actually backing onto the loading bays, what is your process, and how is this area actually covered within the training, besides operating instructions, manuals etc.
How do you ensure that you have given adequate training and instruction on backing onto loading bays.

This is just something that we learned the hard way a few years ago:- If it is the intention to load and unload vehicles using forklift trucks that will actually run onto the vehicle itself from the loading bay, then the vehicle needs to be chocked or tethered so that it can’t move – the opposing action of the forklift can cause the vehicle to move away from the loading bay creating an opening - simply using the vehicle handbrake is insufficient.

If you are looking a driver skills then they should all have CPC and regular refresher training. You don't tend to use banksmen on this due to the entrapment risk. The actual reversing relies on driver skills. Once on the bay everything as mentioned by others above applies.

Drive-away accidents are something to take precautions on - through procedures already described in former posts but also by taking away the drivers keys and not returning them until the vehicle can be safely allowed to go . My company had one of these accidents last year with a ride-on forklift tipping over the edge of the loading bay when the lorry moved off before unloading was complete (this was before I was assigned to work on H&S). Luckily no one was seriously hurt but now we are dealing with a personal injury claim.

Are you asking about the store end or the DC loading end?
